MAXIC(Multiple Application X-ray Imaging Chamber)

Multiple Application X-ray Imaging Chamber (MAXIC) is a platform, on which various coherent diffraction imaging/scattering experiments at SACLA can be performed. Specimens can be loaded using a liquid-jet injector, a gas-jet injector, or mounted on thin (SiN) sample holder. The MPCCD detector can be installed directly on it with for a high numerical aperture or mounted using an extended beam path.


1. Applications include

- Single-particle coherent diffraction imaging
- Single-shot coherent diffraction imaging
- Pump-probe coherent diffraction imaging/scattering
- Nano-crystallography


2. Apparatus details

a. Diffraction chamber
- Compatible with high vacuum 1E-4 Pa
- Compatible with the liquid-jet injector
- Compatible with the gas-jet injector
- Minimum sample-to-detector distance is 70 mm: NA~0.58 using the MPCCD
- Maximum sample-to-detector distance ~ 3.0 m
- View ports available for pump-probe experiments





b. Liquid-jet injector
- Liquid-beam diameter: tunable from 20 μm to less than 3 μm
- Flow rate: minimum 10 μL/min for 3 μm liquid-beam diameter
- Delivery liquid: DI water, ethanol, protein detergent solution, etc
- Focusing by pressurized He or Air
- Precise manipulation of the injector nozzle
- Available components: bore-lens for inline microscope, liquid chromatography pump, cold-trap, etc




c. Gas-jet injector
- Loadable specimen size:
30 nm to 300 nm (aerodynamic lens-I: available)
10 nm to 100 nm (under construction)
- Focused gas-jet diameter: ~ 100 μm (ADL-I)
- Flow rate: 1.0 SLM
- Available components: TSM electro-spray, air compressor, etc.



d. Radiation shields (guard slits)
- Four-way cross slits
- Custom-made for high vacuum applications
- Replaceable slit blades
- Maximum opening: 20 mm
- Minimum opening: 0.0 mm
- Resolution, minimum step & bi-directional repeatability: 0.2, 1 & 2 μm
- Three sets are available
- Slit blades: electro-polished Vanadium (0.5 mm thick, bevel cut and cylindrical)



e. Precision linear motion stages for specimens
- MICOS stages with a total travel length: 18 mm
- Resolution, minimum step & bi-directional repeatability: 0.05, 0.1 & 0.1 μm

f. Fully retractable wire-scan stage
g. Photodiode
h. Polished Si beam attenuators
i. Fluorescent screen & 40cm long focal distance microscope

3. Available components

- High-vacuum compatible diffraction chamber with ports for high power laser illumination
- Liquid-jet injector
- Gas-jet injector
- Radiation shields with four way cross slits
- Fully retractable wire-scan stage
- Linear motion stages for sample manipulations

4. Others

a. MPCCD: total 2048 x 2048 detector array with 50 μm pixel size, multi-port readout allowing 60Hz frame rate, direct illumination, octal sensor with adjustable sensor-to-sensor distance, Peltier cooling with water circulation, etc.
b. Vacuum extension flight tubes: variable lengths connecting MPCCD to the diffraction chamber
c. X-ray pulse picker (shutter)
